The humble office filer scarcely attracts very much thought in our busy offices but a first rate filing cabinet should provide many years of problem free service. Even with the current trend towards the paperless office, filing cabinets are still extensively used as the inescapable fact is that most offices still generate large amounts of written documentation and paperwork that needs to be filed away.
Filing cabinets are mainly constructed from either steel or wood. Of the two common materials used, metal filing cabinets are lighter, more robust, longer lasting and usually are supplied with a manufacturer’s guarantee of up to 15 years dependant upon the quality of the filing cabinet that has been purchased. Wooden filing cabinets are often extremely durable but usually are supplied with a warranty of 5 years or less.
Filing cabinets are designed to store suspension file folders that hang on runners inside each filing drawer. One key design option to watch out for when choosing a filing cabinet is 100% drawer extension. This means that the internal drawers are designed to pull out 100% so that even the files at the extreme rear of the drawer can be easily accessed without having to fumble about inside the cabinet to retrieve files. The runners that support the suspension files are usually built into the top of the drawer sides in a standard filing cabinet so the tab files are usually designed to run from front to back. Some filing cabinets are supplied with fittings to allow both foolscap or A4 sizes to be stored. It is important to note that the drawer bottoms in filing cabinets (and particularly in wood filing cabinets) are not generally designed to support great weight and so the filing cabinets cannot be used as standard drawers.
Bisley filing cabinets are without doubt the leading brand for metal filing cabinets and their top of the range BS series of cabinets are built to last and are usually supplied with a 10 or 15 year manufacturer’s warranty. The BS series incorporates fully welded construction with twin skinned drawer fronts. Drawers are mounted on roller ball bearing drawer mechanisms which deliver ultra-smooth action and full drawer extension. The Bisley BS range includes two, three, four and five drawer versions all of which accept either foolscap or A4 susension files. The BS4E four drawer unit delivers more than 2 linear meters of filing storage.
Primers and paint do not adhere well to plastic – there is no absorption into the material. You can sand ( roughen) the plastic to improve the adhesion of the prime to the plastic. Just a thought – how about automotive paint? Seems to weather well but not designed for brush application.
